Comic Memoir with Cris Siqueria

Lesson Overview

Guest artist, Cris Siqueria, joined the classroom to work with students on writing and illustrating their own comics. Cris shared how she was inspired by real-life events, how she added some imaginative elements, and how she began to plan the story and illustrations. Students began with writing the beginning, middle, and end of their story before working on thumbnail sketches that would use the vocabulary of comic strips to tell their story. After thumbnail sketching Cris demonstrated various strategies for character design. Then, students designed their own characters and setting styles to create a comic memoir inspired by their own lives.

Micro Activism with Sarah Gail Luther

Lesson Overview

Guest artist, Sarah Gail Luther, joined the virtual classroom to lead our class in exploring public art as activism. We began by talking about what public space is, what public art is and why we should care. As a class we brainstormed public spaces in our neighborhoods and how we use public spaces. Students brainstormed issues that were important to them or to their neighbors and community. Each student created their own micro activism, a small achievable public art project as a way to share their voice and be a part of public discourse that addressed an issue of their choice.
